The 10 Most Common Auto Repairs

At Orinda Motors, we work with customers to develop a maintenance schedule that’s specific to the make and model of their cars. This begs the question: What are the 10 most common auto repairs? Here is our list of common auto repairs:

  1. A faulty or damaged oxygen sensor is one of the most common repairs we deal with. We replace oxygen sensors quite often. These devices monitor the amount of oxygen we have in our engine.

  2. One of the biggest reasons the check engine light turns on, is because your gas caps are loose or missing. It is estimated that 147 millions gallons of gas evaporate each year because of a faulty gas cap.

  3. We see a lot of cars with a damaged mass air flow sensor. This sensor measures the the amount of air that is being supplied to the engine. When the mass flow sensor is damaged, it is typically due to a lack of preventive maintenance. This problem is easily avoided by bringing your car to our shop for regular tune-ups.

  4. One of the most expensive repairs is the the replacement of the catalytic converters. These devices are responsible for monitoring our car’s emission system. When this part fails, it is because the maintenance of a smaller part has been ignored.

  5. Spark plugs may be small, but they can certainly cause big problems. It is important to take care of this problem right away, because damaged spark plugs can reduce gas mileage, and even cause damage to your car’s catalytic converter. At our shop, we replace a lot of spark plugs.

  6. Damaged or fault exhaust gas recirculation valves is the fourth leading cause of vehicle failure. As you can see, it is imperative to have a qualified mechanic maintain and repair your car’s exhaust recirculation valve.

  7. Another common problem we come across is a faulty or damaged engine coolant temperature sensor. We replace quite a few of these.

  8. We also come across a lot worn or damaged ignition coils. These coils are responsible for telling spark plugs when to do their job. If you ignore your car’s ignition coils, your engine can become seriously damaged. A simple diagnostic test, completed be one of our mechanics, can easily alert us to any issues, regarding your car’s ignition coils.

  9. We replace a lot of intake manifold gaskets. If we ignore a damaged intake manifold gaskets, we are likely to end up with myriad of larger problems, regarding our car’s economy, emissions, and engine performance.

  10. Many times, we have had to remove a car’s aftermarket alarm. This usually happens when a car-owner decides to install another alarm on their own. If this is done incorrectly, sometimes, power is circuited away from something else. When this happens, we have to remove the aftermarket alarm.

Ignoring an auto repair problem can lead to bigger, more expensive problems down the line. We recommend scheduling a regular appointment for preventative maintenance so we can catch a problem before it occurs.
